KORWA’s celebration of Christmas, through the sharing of joy with the less fortunate, is a commendable embodiment of these principles. It is my sincere hope that KORWA will sustain its exemplary work and achieve continued success in its noble endeavours.”

“We need to be cautious and take precautions for our health, rather than lose our precious life. Let me give an example-my friend Fr Joseph Lobo, realizing the consequences, took an extremely hot water bath, and after pouring the water on his head, he collapsed of a heart attack. Hot water and blood circulation did not mix well, and also due to his existing health related symptoms. Therefore we need to be cautious when we take precautions. Let our aim be to live happily and healthy until we breathe our last. This medical camp was indeed a great awareness programme, and we need to appreciate the KORWA members for joining with us in this project”.
Following a vote of thanks by Ms Precilla Monteiro, it was a short break time to savour the goodies of a sumptuous breakfast consisting of Sannas, Vada, Sambar meticulously by lady parishioners, and also served with homegrown plantains. The programme was eloquently compered by Ms Gladys Colaco-the coordinator of the programme. Br Alwyn Crasta also graced the occasion.
The First Aid Training programme conducted by Sacith Suvarna-the Director of Youth Red Cross Society -Dakshina Kannada was especially as to how we have to survive a victim who meets with an accident, how fast can we shift the victim by giving necessary first aid training and move him to a nearby higher center for further care and treatment. Suvarna also stressed upon the importance of Cardiac evaluation at initial period ,observing and notice the signs and symptoms and how fast he can be mobilized to higher care centers. He also demonstrated the CPR techniques using a volunteer from the audience. He also briefed upon some of the Common Emergencies which are brought to the hospital Emergency Department. He also gave an insight on how Epilepsy and Stroke patients should be taken care of.
It was a well organized project, actively participated by the parishioners with all the efforts put in by KORWA and their associates in this project. Dev Borem Korum!

True Meaning of Christmas Shared with Less-Privileged Kids with Goodies & Fun by KORWA
Quoting from the Bible Mark 10 verse 45-” For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many”, .for the past 22 years, the members of Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA), Mangaluru have been working as the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. The members of this organization have always focused on their objective to foster a feeling of brotherhood, lend a helping hand to the needy, and become a ray of hope in their life. KORWA has now organized this incredible Christmas Celebration to share the spirit of Christmas with the ones who are dearest to Jesus. And that’s the dear Children, who are most loved, by God, by Jesus, and by all the members of KORWA. The children’s joy and their smiles are all that was needed by KORWA to make this Joyous Christmas season brighter.

“Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat”-said Saint Mother Teresa; Quoting Pope Francis where he had said, “In a world where there is so much wealth, so many resources to feed everyone, it is unfathomable that there are so many poor persons. Poverty today is a cry. I believe in the kindness of others, and that I must love them without fear. None of us can think we are exempt from concern for the poor and social justice. The world tells us to seek success, power, and money; God tells us to seek humility, service, and love.”
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Therefore the members of KORWA came together to celebrate and rejoice in God’s unconditional love for mankind. I think Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) members have done the right thing again by sharing the spirit of Christmas with the less-fortunate children of the four Orphanages/Ashrams, and this year too they organized the programme with lots of fun and frolic, including a large audience of Children. Every year, KORWA celebrates it with a bang inviting hundreds of less-privileged children from various orphanages, to this BIG programme comprising of music, dance, fun and frolic, and Santa Claus making a guest appearance to cheer the children and adults.
Christmas is life, and these less-privileged children are the future life of the world. Children are God’s gift to us. We should be grateful to the members of KORWA for showing their love towards these children, thereby bringing smiles to their faces. Christmas is all about sharing and giving, and hereby we have the KORWA members sharing part of their wealth with these children, thereby showing the perfect example of Christmas. While the KORWA members entertained the children with goodies, in return the Children entertained them with dances, Christmas carol singing etc and everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly, equally and joyfully.
Christmas is not a family festival, but is a festival of unity, brotherhood and joy, celebrating the coming of Jesus to save us from sin- and we celebrate his coming as Christmas. Christmas is the time to celebrate joy with our neighbours, the poor and downtrodden forgetting caste, creed and religion. Jesus came to this world and he loved the poor and the downtrodden. To celebrate Christmas with the less fortunate in society, we need to compliment KORWA members for bringing the joy of Christmas to the less-fortunate children.
The programme began with the flag bearers marching to the rhythm, in synchrony, to symbolize love and fraternity, followed by a prayer to invoke God’s blessings. The welcome address was delivered by Lancy Menezes-the President of KORWA, following which the programme was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries on the dais, namely Chief Guest former MLA J R Lobo, Guest of Honour Fr Vincent Monteiro-Parish Priest of St Sebastian Church, Bendore; joined by Governing Board members of KORWA – Loius Lobo ( Convenor and Former president) Archie Menezes (Advisory Member); Lancy D’ Souza (Vice President); Henry Castelino (Secretary); John Moras Treasurer); Mrs. Greta Gomes (Joint Secretary),; Suraj Rebello (Cultural Secretary), Ronald Vaz and.Henry Fernandes (Governing Council members)
J R Lobo speaking on the occasion said “It is a beautiful programme, celebrating Christmas with the less privileged children, and Korwa members are doing a yeomen service by entertaining and putting smiles on the faces of these children during the Christmas season. It is a true way of celebrating Christmas. It is not a family festival but a festival of unity, brotherhood and joy. We celebrate the coming of Jesus to save us from sin. And we celebrate his coming as Christmas. Christmas is all about Sharing and Giving, and Korwa has done the right way to mark the joyous Christmas among these children “.
Fr Vincent Monteiro spoke on the importance of Christmas, and how it should be celebrated among everyone with peace, joy and happiness. He said, ” Christmas is the time to celebrate joy with our neighbours, the poor and downtrodden forgetting caste, creed and religion. Jesus came to this world and he loved the poor and the downtrodden. We are distributing cakes and sweets within the family. Instead of celebrating Christmas with our people, let’s celebrate Christmas with the less fortunate in a society like Jesus taught. When we understand the true meaning of Christmas and share the joy it will be a real celebration. We need to compliment KORWA members for bringing the joy of Christmas among the less-fortunate children”.
Louis Lobo, the founder member of Korwa and who initiated the unique Christmas programme with children was felicitated on the occasion. Raising the spirits high was a melodious Mashup of Bollywood music by the duo of gifted singers Ms Bindu and Ms Adlyn with Chris who accompanied them on the guitar. Then came the power-packed performance by the most popular Dance troupe in Mangaluru, the “Show Stoppers”. The Show stoppers have performed more than 2000 shows all over India and abroad, and they are the best in their field. Giving top-notch dance performances wherever they go. The next singer for the evening was not just a singer, he is an entertainer. When he sings he expresses the song deep down from his heart. From a young age, he was enthusiastic about music and singing. And has now developed himself to be a fine crooner- and he is Shreyal Vas
Talented Poi performance by Nathan Benette and Brian Britto was indeed a treat for our eyes, and they mesmerized the audience. The Lady with a Golden voice, put the audience in trans with her rendition of the Super-hit song “Dil hai Chota sa”, was the multi- talented, actor, singer, composer and performer Ms Priya Menezes. The melodious youth of ” One Voice Choir” rendered a few Christmas carols and other songs. Their performance was incredible. A huge round of applause to Elton Martin Ferrao and his team ‘The One Voice Youth Choir’. This choir has about 100 members associated with it. Indeed Martin has done a fantastic job in getting Catholic youth singers all over Mangaluru under one umbrella. Since all of the members sang soulfully and brought alive the spirit of Christmas with their voices.
The leading Choreographer of Mangaluru and the founder of ‘ Showstoppers Dance institute, Sandeep Acharya was felicitated on the occasion. Ajith Singh of St. Aloysius College, a versatile singer with an enchanting voice, who had been a part of several shows and competitions, sang the most trending song Kesariya from the movie Bramhastra.
The Korwa technical support team Ms Shaina Rebello; Rayston Sam D’souza and Ms Jane Mascarenhas were also felicitated. The sponsors were felicitated on the occasion, including Yours Truly (Alfie D’souza) of Team Mangalorean, where Mangalorean.com has been their official media partner for years.
The most exciting performance was witnessing a spectacle that left the audience spellbound was the superb dance performances by Koushik Suvarna and his team. Koushik Suvarna has been a dancer for the past 13 years. Our kudlada Pili has brought laurels to our city by putting up a tough competition at Dance Tamila Dance for Zee Tamil Channel and by being the Finalist of the Kick Dance show on Udaya Television. Then it was time to listen to the divine voice of young Marzin Hussain. The talented Compere of the evening Dr Jasmine D’souza entertained the audience with Goa’s singing sensation Lorna’s song “Bebdo’, which led to a few people stepping up on the dance floor and shaking their body and hips.
Gifts were distributed to the kids, and the entry of Santa Claus brought lots of laughter and cheers among the children, as well as adults. Santa distributed sweets, and goodies and danced with the children. The duo clad in Santa outfits entertained the children, and a joyous atmosphere was spread inside the hall. Before these performances, the children of De Mercedes Orphanage-Paneer;m Infant Jesus Orphanage-Mary Hill; St Gerosa Hostel-Jeppu; Infant Mary’s Hostel-Kulshekar; Shalom Educational & Charitable Trust; Jeevadan- Gurpur; and St Angela’s Girls Home-Bejai entertained the audience with dances depicting the true meaning of Christmas. Henry Castelino proposed the Vote of Thanks, and the entire programme was meticulously and eloquently compared by the Star Attraction of the evening Dr Jasmine D’souza. The programme concluded with a baila dance, and with a sumptuous dinner served by M D’Souza Caterers.
In conclusion, in my perspective, “If we believe Christmas is about peace, then we must convey peace, by giving peace to those around us and by reaching out to others as a peacemaker. If we believe Christmas is about light, then light must shine in our lives, as we brighten up the lives of our brothers and sisters. If Christmas is about love, then love must be at the heart of our lives, as we bring love to those who need to be understood and cared for. If Christmas is about joy, then our lives must radiate joy and we must smile and be happy wherever we are. If Christmas is about hope, hope must grow in our hearts and we must bring hope to those who are down and feel despair.”
If Christmas is about liberty, liberty must be respected and all people must experience that respect. If Christmas is about God’s Son, then we need to acknowledge His message of peace and love. If Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ, then we need to acknowledge this birth with great joy. If Christmas is a celebration of “God with us,” then we need to grow in our realization that God is always in our midst, that God is always with us. May the celebration of the Feast of Christmas bring us all that we desire at this point in our lives”. Kudos and thanks to KORWA for bringing the joy of Christmas into the hearts of these underprivileged Children of seven institutions. Merry Christmas well in advance to all!

Prevention is Better Than Cure! KORWA organizes ‘First Aid Awareness Programme’ at Kelarai Church
Prevention is Better Than Cure! Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA ) in association with India Red Cross Society Dakshina Kannada Branch and St Anne Church-Kelarai, Mangaluru organizes “FIRST AID’ Awareness programme ‘ at the Kelarai Church Hall on Sunday, 3 July 2022
Mangaluru: Always Prevention is better than cure. It’s cheaper too. In fact, preventing future illnesses and preventing complications from existing conditions, are vital to the future sustainability of health systems. With many conditions, earlier intervention improves patient outcomes and spares them – and the health system – avoidable illnesses and treatments. Yet less than 3% of health budgets is devoted to prevention. The rest goes on to cure and care. I sometimes think we should refer to healthcare as ‘sick care’ – a system focused on ‘healthcare’ would dedicate itself to preserving good health for as long as possible.

And Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA ) which has doen yeomen services in the past through various health related programmes, like Blood Donation Camps, Medical Camps, etc, and also community service, organized a “FIRST AID’ Awareness Medical Camp’ at the Kelarai Church Hall on Sunday, 3 July 2022 with theme “Prevention is Better Than Treatment! in association with India Red Cross Society Dakshina Kannada Branch and St Anne Church-Kelarai, Mangaluru organizes
Looking back at the history of Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA)-Mangaluru, it is a non-profit organization serving as a bridge between donors and local communities. It emerged in the year 2010, with few Founder members with a desire to commence an association in order to effectively serve the people of overseas Indian returnees of the Konkan region. And only to those who are in distress and who have either retired or are jobless and facing various difficulties. Also to serve the under privileged children’s education and medicals needs of Konkan region with no distinction whatsoever on the basis of creed, colour, race, caste, sex or status.
The main objectives of forming KORWA, was to foster a feeling of brotherhood and lend a helping hand to the needy, and become a ray of hope in their life. Many in the past year have benefited from the support of KORWA. For their education and medical needs. KORWA’s small support meant a lot to them, and in doing so KORWA members believed it was a small way of saying “We Care For The Less Fortunate”.
And among the many community projects that they undertake every year, their BIGGEST Annual programme is the ‘Christmas Celebration’ where the true meaning of Christmas “Sharing & Giving” is highlighted by distributing Goodies with Less-Privileged Kids, joined by fun extravaganza, thereby putting miles of smiles on these unfortunate children. And KORWA members have shown their love and care to the underprivileged by offering their help through various sources and community projects.
In November 2021, KORWA had joined with Rotary Club of Mangalore, yet another organization that undertakes various community projects, in organizing a useful project-the ‘FIRST AID TRAINING PROGRAMME’ conducted by KMC Dr Jeedhu Radhakrishnan- the Karnataka State Secretary for EMERGENCY Medicine Association, India. In March 2022, KORWA in association Indian Red Cross Society -Dakshina Kannada, Catholic Sabha Mangaluru Pradesh-Vamanjoor; St Joseph’s Church-Vamanjoor; and Health Commission Unit of Vamanjoor Church organized Blood Donation/Medical Camp & First Aid Training. And now a similar kind of project is organized at St Anne Church-Kelarai in the outskirts of Mangaluru.
The programme began with invoking God’s blessings through a English hymn sung by Kelarai parishioners, namely- Ms Arleen D’souza, Ms Glenita D’souza, Miss Reha Vas and Ms Veronica, followed by welcome address by Maxim Pinto- the Secretary of Church Pastoral Committee. The programme was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by chief guest Fr Joseph Mascarenhas- the Parish Priest of St annes Church-Kelarai; joined by other dignitaries on the dais, namely Louis Lobo- Co-Founder and Advisor of Korwa; Lancy Menezes- President of Korwa; Maxim Pinto; and Ms Precilla Monteiro- In-charge of Church Youth activities.
Addressing the nearly 200 parishioners in the audience Fr Joseph Mascarenhas said, “Like it is said that “Prevention is better than cure” we need to take care of our health, and not wait till the last minute. Never neglect when it comes to taking care of our health. It’s sad to note that too many youngsters are dying due to cancer or other health related cases, because of their negligence, bad food habits and consumption of alcohol. When God is the giver of life, we also need to respect and take care of our life. Let us learn more from the medical camp on awareness of first aid”.
The main objectives of forming KORWA, is to foster a feeling of brotherhood and lend a helping hand to the needy, and become a ray of hope in their life.
“Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat”-said Saint Mother Teresa; and Quoting Pope Francis where he had said , “In a world where there is so much wealth, so many resources to feed everyone, it is unfathomable that there are so many poor persons. Poverty today is a cry. I believe in the kindness of others, and that I must love them without fear. None of us can think we are exempt from concern for the poor and for social justice. The world tells us to seek success, power, and money; God tells us to seek humility, service, and love.” And KORWA members have shown their love and care to the under-priviledged by offering their help through various sources and community projects.
And this time, KORWA has joined with Rotary Club of Mangalore, a yet another organization which undertakes various community projects, in organizing this useful project-the ‘FIRST AID TRAINING PROGRAMME’ conducted by Dr.Jeedhu Radhakrishnan. The First Aid Training programme was especially as to how we have to survive a victim who meets with an accident, how fast can we shift the victim by giving necessary first aid training and move him to a nearby higher center for further care and treatment. Dr Jeedhu also stressed upon the importance of Cardiac evaluation at initial period ,observing and notice the signs and symptoms and how fast he can be mobilized to higher care centers. Dr.Jeedhu also demonstrated the CPR techniques to the students who were very keen in doing the CPR process. I think Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) members have done the right thing again by sharing the spirit of Christmas with the less-fortunate children of the four Orphanages/Ashrams, and this year they kept their project in a smaller and sombre way, due to the pandemic. Unlike every year, they celebrate it with a bang inviting hundreds of less-privileged children from various orphanages, to a BIG programnme comprising of music, dance, fun and frolic, and Santa Claus making a guest appearance to cheer the children and adults. Unfortunately, there was nothing of that sort at the moment, but to keep KORWA’s yearly tradition of Christmas spirit alive and community service, they organized this small budget project on Tuesday, 22 December 2020.
Christmas is life, and these less-privileged children are the future life of the world. Children are God’s gift to us. We should be grateful to the members of KORWA for showing their love towards these children, thereby bringing smiles on their faces. Christmas is all about sharing and giving, and hereby we have the KORWA members sharing part of their wealth with these children, thereby showing the perfect example of Christmas. KORWA’s Governing body members visited and distributed goodies consisting of sweets, toys, gifts, school stationery items etc to these ashrams, namely- Dr Mercede Orphanage-Paneer; Jeevadaan Rehabilitation center in Kaikamba; Prajna Counselling Center, Mangaluru; and Prashanth Nilaya, Jeppu, Mangaluru. KORWA members who joined in the project were Louis Lobo, Lancy Menezes, Lancy D Souza, John Moras, Gretta Gomes and Brandon Lobo
While the KORWA members entertained the children with goodies, in return the Children entertained them with dances, Christmas carol singing etc and everyone enjoyed thoroughly, equally and joyfully. It was indeed thoughtful celebrating Christmas with the children who are less privileged, and it was a true way of celebrating Christmas. Christmas is not a family festival, but is a festival of unity, brotherhood and joy, celebrating the coming of Jesus to save us from sin. And we celebrate his coming as Christmas. Christmas is the time to celebrate joy with our neighbours, the poor and downtrodden forgetting caste, creed and religion. Jesus came to this world and he loved the poor and the downtrodden. For celebrating Christmas with the less fortunate in the society, we need to compliment KORWA members for bringing the joy of Christmas among the less-fortunate children.
” If Christmas is about liberty, liberty must be respected and all people must experience that respect. And thanks to KORWA for bringing the joy of Christmas into the hearts of these under-privileged Children of the four institutions. Merry Christmas well in advance!

The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Jessy Pinto of KORWA, and the compering of the function was professionally done by Manoj Lewis. It is not a family festival, but is a festival of unity, brotherhood and joy”. In olden days pagans were celebrating various festivals and Christmas is the one since then. We celebrate Jesus Birthday but it is not the question of Jesus Birth, no one knows the exact date when Jesus was born but we all are sure that 2000 years ago Jesus was born in the winter season. We celebrate the coming of Jesus to save us from sin. And we celebrate his coming as Christmas. Christmas is the time to celebrate joy with our neighbours, the poor and downtrodden forgetting caste, creed and religion. Jesus came to this world and he loved the poor and the downtrodden. Instead of celebrating Christmas with our own people lets celebrate Christmas with the less fortunate in the society like Jesus taught. When we understand the true meaning of Christmas and share the joy it will be a real celebration”.
In his presidential address, Rev Dr Peter Paul Saldanha said, “I am happy to be among you all and see happy and smiling faces. The birth of Jesus has brought joy and smiles among you all. Christmas is an intensely religious day as we remember the birth of our saviour, one who has brought us the Good News of God’s love. For Pope Francis: “Christmas is a warm, widely celebrated feast, able to warm the coldest hearts, to remove the barriers of indifference to one’s neighbour, to encourage openness to the other and free giving. … Therefore, there is need today to spread the message of peace and fraternity proper to Christmas; there is need to represent this event [through song, music and art] by expressing the genuine sentiments that animate it. Christmas is the time to show tenderness, peace and hospitality, which spring from the Bethlehem cave. I am happy to note that KORWA is sharing the love, joy and happiness of Christmas among these less-fortunate children. May God bless you all”.

Addressing the gathering Lobo said, “I am very happy to be part of this programme, today all the children are looking like the red stars. Children are here to celebrate Christmas. Two thousand years ago, Jesus was born like a star. Jesus was born in a manger, and he died on the cross living his life for others. I am very proud that KORWA is following the teachings of Jesus. They are celebrating Christmas in a very meaningful way. Because Jesus served the people and died for the people, throughout his life Jesus served the downtrodden. Jesus lived his life for others. Christmas means, not a happy joyful dinner, Christmas is not dancing or making merry, but Christmas is loving and serving others. We should be the messengers to propagate peace”.
Lobo also said, “Christmas is to love one another and not to wear skimpy clothes and enjoying which has brought a bad name. Whoever in need, we need to help them. KORWA has celebrated Christmas in a meaningful way and brought smiles on the faces of children who are deprived of such a life. Whoever has received help from the KORWA should follow in their footsteps and help others who are in need when they are independent and earn enough”.
Corrine Rasquinha, Brigadier I N Rai, Wing Commander Devaraj Belle and Commander J P Mascarenhas were felicitated by KORWA for their exemplary service to the society and country.
Children, as well as elders, enjoyed the Christmas Celebrations with Christmas carols, songs, dance etc from the children of various institutions and mimicry by Sharan Kaikamba.
Children were seen eagerly waiting for Santa’s arrival. Finally, the Santa arrived with his team with lots of goodies for the children. All the children were given sweets and gifts once again making the KORWA Christmass celebrations a memorable one.

Joy to the World! KORWA celebrates the ‘Coming of Jesus’ with Orphanage Kids
“Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat”-Mother Teresa
Mangalore: Quoting Pope Francis where he tells, “In a world where there is so much wealth, so many resources to feed everyone, it is unfathomable that there are so many poor persons. Poverty today is a cry. I believe in the kindness of others, and that I must love them without fear. None of us can think we are exempt from concern for the poor and for social justice. The world tells us to seek success, power, and money; God tells us to seek humility, service, and love.” – I think Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) members have done the right thing again by sharing the spirit of Christmas with the less-fortunate children of the various orphanages in and around Mangaluru.

Addressing the gathering MLA J R Lobo said, “It is a beautiful programme, celebrating Christmas with the children who are less privileged lot. It is a true way of celebrating Christmas. It is not a family festival, but is a festival of unity, brotherhood and joy”. In olden days pagans were celebrating various festivals and Christmas is the one since then. We celebrate Jesus Birthday but it is not the question of Jesus Birth, no one knows the exact date when Jesus was born but we all are sure that 2000 years ago Jesus born in the winter season. We celebrate the coming of Jesus to save us from sin. And we celebrate his coming as Christmas.
Lobo further said that now a days people forget the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas is the time to celebrate joy with our neighbours, the poor and downtrodden forgetting caste, creed and religion. Jesus came to this world and he loved the poor and the downtrodden. We are distributing cakes and sweets within the family. Instead of celebrating Christmas with out own people lets celebrate Christmas with the less fortunate in the society, like Jesus taught. When we understand the true meaning of Christmas and share the joy it will be a real celebration, he said.
The Christmas Celebration was filled with dance, songs, music, mimicry, skit and much more. The cultural show comprised of dance by Spandana children; dance from De Marcede Orphanage children; a act by Jeevadan children; renowned singer Anitha D’souza performed a solo song enthralling the audience; dance from St Joseph School Children-Gurpur; a act by St Aloysian Boys Home children-Kotekar; mimicry by Vishmay Vinayak and partner; a act by Prajna Counselling Centre children; mesmerising and scintillating dance performance by Almirah Shareena, who is the grand-daughter of Flora Hilsop, a active Korwa member.
A religious skit by Bethrram Formation House; song by Rynal Sequeira; scintillating dance by Illusion group; Christmas carols by Miss Steffi Pereira and group; and much more. The entry of Santa Claus brought lots of laughter and cheers among the children, as well as adults. Santa distributed sweets, goodies and danced with the children. Sponsors and well-wishers were honoured on the occasion. Gifts were also distributed to the kids. Elias Sanctis proposed the vote of thanks. Comperes Vybhav D’Souza and new comer Sushmitha John kept the audience live with their witty punchlines. The programme concluded with a sumptuous dinner served by M D’Souza Caterers.
In conclusion since Christmas is a season of sharing and giving, especially with the children, I end report with the lyrics the Band Aid “Do They Know It’s Christmas”-
It’s Christmas time, and there’s no need to be afraid
At Christmas time, we let in light and banish shade
And in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world-At Christmas time
But say a prayer and pray for the other ones
At Christmas time, it’s hard but while you’re having fun
There’s a world outside your window, and it’s a world of dread and fear
Where a kiss of love can kill you, and there’s death in every tear
And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight we’re reaching out and touching you
Bring peace and joy this Christmas around the World
How can they know it’s Christmas time at all
Can they know it’s Christmas time at all
Feed the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again

The Konkan Overseas Returnees' Welfare Association (KORWA) organized 'Christmas Celebrations'
Mangaluru: "Jingle Bells, jingle Bells, Jingle all the way - Korwa members made Christmas a meaningful and joyful day !"- That's right! The Konkan Overseas Returnees' Welfare Association (KORWA) organized 'Christmas Celebrations' once again like they do every year as Christmas Day nears in the Loyola Hall St Aloysius PU College, here on December 13, 2014. If we want to experience the real joy that Jesus wants for us, then we must learn to share! By sharing what God has so generously given to us, we will receive an even greater gift -- the gift of joy. And that is exactly what members of "Korwa" do every Christmas by entertaining hundreds of children, giving them sweets and gifts, thereby putting a smile on their faces. Indeed a thoughtful and meaningful project I can say!

Fr Santhosh Kamath delivering a meaningful Christmas message to the children and adults said, "Yes, Christmas is a season of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us. It can be a time of healing and renewed strength. You see, Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event. We can truly be happy at Christmas! No matter what may be happening, we can know that we are His children. We then become sons and daughters of God. Heaven will be our home one day.

At any event where one finds press persons scribbling feverishly on their notepads and paparazzi popping their flashes, most of the time it is the males who dominate the scene. Only occasionally a handful of women would be found. Even the women would be on the payroll of media houses. But one hardly comes across the 'First Lady' of a media house personally covering or photographing the events. Violet Pereira is an exception. During the olden days when angels feared to tread into the world of media photography, she practically 'gatecrashed' into the male domain and soon secured a firm foothold. Her achievements are all the more remarkable because of the fact that she has had a problem with the faculty of eyesight for many years- but still she manages to bring out the best and fresh news coverage as quickly as possible.
It was indeed very thoughtful of Korwa members to felicitate one of their founder member Violet Pereira for her greatest achievement in receiving the 2014 Rajyotsava Award for photography/journalism, during the occasion. Korwa member-Archie Menezes briefed and read the citation of Violet Pereira- the proprietor of Mangalorean.com. Violet's contribution in the field of journalism/photography towards the community brought her the coveted Rajyotsava Award 2014, adding yet another credit to her other previous awards received from various other organizations. In recognition for her achievement in the field of journalism/photography, and for her 24x7 dedication and hard work, Korwa felicitated her during this occasion with a shawl, fruit basket and memento. My hearty congrats to Violet Maam.
Ho.ho..ho Here comes the Santa Claus offering lots of goodies and sweets for the children. Not just one Santa- there were three, including a "tiny Santa?" The trio Santas distributed the gifts to every child that attended the celebration. All the sponsors/donors were honoured on the occasion for their whole-hearted support towards Korwa projects. MLC Ivan D'Souza who made a guest appearance was praised and complimented for his role in re-starting the Mangaluru-Kuwait flight by Korwa member Elias Sanctis. MLC Ivan also spoke and complimented the great work done by Korwa and its enthusiastic and dedicated members.
With few more entertainment on the schedule, Elias Sanctis delivered the vote of thanks, and the great celebration ended with a fellowship/sumptuous dinner catered by one of the donor of the event-Loy D'Souza of M D'Souza Caterers. Vaibhav D’Souza and Reena D'souza compered the show. The kids were happy, the adults were happy-it was one happy and "Merry Christmas Celebration 2014" meticulously
and well planned and organized by KORWA. Three cheers and kudos to organizing committee and members for putting up a great show.
And with just a few days to go before Christmas, let's sing Joy to the World and talk about ways that Jesus brings joy to your lives. Only 12 days before Christmas, I end this column with my own Jesus-centred remake of " The Twelve Days of Christmas"-
On the first day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, His Spirit to live in me.
On the second day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, two helping hands…
On the third day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, three cups of kindness…
On the fourth day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, four jugs of joy…
On the fifth day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, five reasons to share…
On the sixth day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, six packs of peace…
On the seventh day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, seven sacks of smiles…
On the eighth day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, eight gobs of goodness…
On the ninth day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, nine loads of love…
On the tenth day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, ten tons of trust…
On the eleventh day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, eleven pounds of patience…
On the twelfth day of Christmas, Jesus gave to me, twelve jars of gentleness…
Ho..ho..ho..wish you all a "Merry Christmas"-- until next 'KORWA Christmas Celebration 2015" peace be with you till we meet again!

Kanara Oversees Returnees Association (KORWA) members presented a memorandum to Mangalore south MLA J R Lobo
Mangalore, 23 Feb 2014: On behalf of all Mangaloreans in Kuwait and their families in Mangalore, the representatives of Kanara Oversees Returnees Association (KORWA) led by their president Louis Lobo and Vice president Elias Sanctis and other members presented a memorandum to Mangalore south MLA J R Lobo, here on Saturday February 22, urging him to exert pressure in restoring the cancelled Air India Express (AIE) direct flight to Kuwait at the earliest.

MLA Lobo said that he is aware of the issue, and has already initiated the necessary action to place the issue for discussion in the assembly, in the coming week.
The representatives were vociferous in informing him that the people of Mangalore are unnecessarily discriminated compared to neighboring state by giving feeble reasons about the load factor and the expiry of the lease of the aircrafts.
They stated that the only available flight to Mangalore from Kuwait was cancelled and the travelers from Mangalore to Kuwait are again subject to severe inconveniences and sufferings, where as all the flights to Kozhikode and Kochi are operating as usual. AIE would have continued the Kuwait/Mangalore/Kozhikode flight and looked at other options, so that the deprivation of ease of travel to the people of Mangalore could have been avoided. They also wondered whether the flight destinations were changed intentionally from Kuwait/Mangalore/Kozhikode to Kuwait/Mangalore/Kochi to prove the point of lack of load so that the flight could be cancelled under pressure from certain lobbies.

Suspension of the flight will have disastrous effects all around and urge Mr. J. r. Lobo to look in to this matter and put pressure on civil Aviation Ministry , union Ministers, MP's and others to restore the Air India Express service or any other private airlines to introduce their flights as soon as possible, to ensure that the region and its people do not suffer on account on this sudden withdrawal of the Mangalore Kuwait Air India flight services
MLA Lobo listened patiently to all grievances and assured his full support. He stated that he has already briefed the minister of state for civil aviation and minister of state for infrastructure. He further said if required he will raise the issue with union minister for civil aviation.
The leaders of KORWA informed MLA Lobo that they are ready to join him both at Bangalore and at New Delhi if required. MLA Lobo informed the delegates that he will update them of the outcome of the discussion at the earliest.
Rachana / Korwa demands resumption of Mangalore-Kuwait flight service
Mangalore, Feb 14: Rachana, Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday February 14 held a protest against Air India Express over the suspension of Mangalore-Kuwait Flights by Air. The protest was held in front of the Air India Express office, Lalbagh.

Addressing the protest, Ivan D'Souza, president of Rachana said, "Reports in the media that Air India Express has officially wound up its flight services between Mangalore and Kuwait from Thursday, February 13, apparently due to the lack of availability of aircraft after the expiry of the contract, is shocking news for the people of region. What we fail to understand is how the said services can continue on the extant route of Kozhikode to Kuwait even as it bypasses a location that has thousands of passengers desirous of using the services from Mangalore to Kuwait.
"As a state owned airline, Air India Express has a social obligation to serve the thousands of citizens that travel from this region to Kuwait, and the existing flight services were indeed a boon to citizens of the coastal region. Mangalore, 15 Jul 2012:
Recently, some of the members of the Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) visited 'Samvedhana' the shelter for the HIV affected children and spent some time with them.
From around 15 years Citizens Alliance for Rural Development and Training Society (CARDTS) Press Association, United Business Media and YMCA Mangalore has been working spreading awareness regarding HIV among truckers, migrants and commercial sex-workers by talking to them and also by explaining to them the ways to prevent HIV by having safe sex. As the volunteers were conducting these programs and were visiting different houses, they found a girl who was HIV Positive. Her parents had passed away. The people who were looking after her requested the volunteers to take the kid along with them to their organization.

Thus, with one girl-child the shelter home 'Samvedhana' came into existence in 2003.
Within three months after taking into shelter the lone HIV affected girl-child, eight more HIV affected children were admitted as they had no one to take care of them as their parents had fallen victims to the dreaded disease.
The organization has been passing through difficult phases. The house in which the humanitarian work of giving shelter to the unfortunate HIV affected children was initiated had to be vacated as the owner of the house came to know that the children were affected by the HIV. Thus, the organization had to change four to five houses within a period of one year.
As if the apathy of the house owners towards the HIV affected children was not enough, the schools where these children were studying forced them to leave once these schools came to know about the HIV status of the children. In spite of all these difficulties, 'Samvedhana' has been taking care of the children.
Presently, 'Samvedhana' is located at Shiv Residency, Near Karnataka Bank Head Office, Pumpwell, Mangalore and has 58 children, 22 of them are females and 36 are males. In the past 9 years 18 of them succumbed to the disease. The organization is not getting any financial help from the government. The organization runs purely on the voluntary work of its members and is in need of financial support from philanthropists and donors.
