Udupi: KORWA distributes school bags to needy children at Kallianpur
Udupi: Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) on Saturday June 4 distributed school bags to needy, deserving children in a simple ceremony at Milagres School hall at Kallianpur.
The school bags were distributed to 650 under privileged school children of St Joseph Higher Primary School, L.V.P. Higher Primary school, etc at Kallianpur, Udupi district. Sr Susheela Monteiro UFS headmistress of St Joseph Higher Primary school welcomed the gathering.
Addressing the students, Louis Lobo, president of Korwa said, "KORWA is an association formed by a group of people who have returned from the Gulf region, for the welfare of Gulf returnees and needy people in their homeland. After returning from abroad in order to give something back to society, we formed this organization. Students should work hard and study well in order to succeed in life."

Fr Stany B Lobo, rector of Milagres Cathedral was the chief guest. In his address, he said "KORWA has taken this initiative to support the children in their education. The best way to pay KORWA back is to study well and score good marks in exams. If you don't do well in your studies then their efforts will fail. So I advise you children to study well so that their efforts bear fruits. It is wonderful to see that the members of KORWA are doing a marvellous job and I appreciate their noble work of donating school bags to children."
Students offered prayers during the assembly and expressed their happiness for getting the school bags and appreciated KORWA members with gratitude.
Florine Mascarenhas, headmistress of LVP. Higher Primary School proposed vote of thanks. She also expressed her gratitude to KORWA for donating the school bags for students.
KORWA's Jessy Pinto, Ronald Gomes, David D Souza, Lawrence Lobo and Vikram Cutinha and others were present.

Mangaluru: KORWA extends helping hand to 500 needy children
Mangaluru: Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) on Sunday June 28 distributed school bags and books to needy, deserving children in a simple ceremony at Milagres hall here. Bags and school books were distributed to 500 children of St Joseph the Worker School, St Rita Higher Primary School, Government Higher Primary School, Al Hazan School and many other schools.
Addressing the students, Mangaluru south MLA J R Lobo said, "KORWA is an association formed by a group of people who have returned from the Gulf region, for the welfare of Gulf returnees and needy people in their homeland. After completing their education they went abroad in search of jobs, and in order to give something back to society they formed this organization.

"KORWA has taken this initiative to support the children in their education. The best way to pay KORWA back is to study well and score good marks in exams. If you don't do well in your studies then their efforts will fail. So I advise you children to study well so that their efforts bear fruit," he added.
President of KORWA Louis Lobo welcomed the gathering. DySP Dr Venkatesh Prasanna, KORWA vice-president Elias Sanctis, former mayor Judith Mascarenhas, parish priest of Milagres Church Fr Valerian D'Souza and others were present.

Mangalore, 17 Jun 2014: Konkani Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) donated gifts to the inmates of Our Lady of Mercy orphanage, Panir, here on Monday June 16.
KORWA president Louis Lobo presented the gifts to 79 students at the orphanage, Panir here on Monday. KORWA secretary Jacinta Pinto, PRO John Valerian Tauro, former mayor Judith Mascarenhas, John Fernandes, social activist and philanthropist Santosh Sequeira, Our Lady of Mercy orphanage superior Sr Luciana, 2 German volunteers and others were present on the occasion.
KORWA is actively involved in social welfare activities bringing ray of hope among the unfortunate children and HIV+ children in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Mangalore, 06 March 2014: The members of Konkani Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) paid a visit and distributed stationery items to the poor and needy students of St Xavier's Higher Primary School, Neerude , and shared their joy on Wednesday March 05, 2014. This School is runs the classes from I to VII Standard. The children who study here are from a very poor and below the poverty line families.

St Xavier's Higher Primary School head teacher welcomed the gathering and introduced the committee members of the KORWA namely: Mr. Louis Lobo, President; Mr. Elias Sanctis Vice President; Mrs. Flora Hislop, Joint Secretary; Mrs. Jessie Pinto, General Secretary. and Mrs Gretta Gomes. She also expressed her gratitude to KORWA for donating the stationery items to the students.
The students offered prayers during the assembly held in school hall and expressed their happiness for getting the stationery items and appreciated KORWA members in gratitude.
KORWA advised the students to work hard on their studies and wished them a bright future. Rev. Fr. Archibald J. Albuquerque Parish Priest of Neerude Church was present and expressed his joy of witnessing such an social work done by KORWA Association. He prayed and wished for growth of the Association. Mangalore, 14 Dec 2013 : Konkan Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) has donated an Invertor to one of Prajna's Counselling Centre Mangalore. Prajna has been taking care of 40-50 under privileged children. When there is a power cut children used to suffer a lot as all of them are studying. The children were very happy to receive the Invertor and appreciated the members of KORWA for their generosity towards the poor people. The Management of Prajna thanked KORWA and wished them all the best for their Charity event "Christmas Celebration 2013" which is going to take place on 14th December 2013 at Loyola Hall, St. Aloysius College Mangalore from 5.00pm till 9.30 pm.

KORWA has invited No. of orphanage children from different areas to come-in groups and giving them a chance to enjoy this beautiful Christmas Programme. KORWA is sponsoring all expenses to get these groups to the venue.

Mangalore, 13 Aug 2013: The members of Konkani Overseas Returnees Welfare Association (KORWA) paid a visit to Jeevadaan HIV/AIDS Centre located at Gurpur – Kaikamba, near here on Monday August 12. KORWA donated groceries to the authorities of Jeevadaan on the occasion. Besides, distributed goodies to AIDS children and shared their joy.
Jeevadaan, the care and support centre for HIV/AIDS is a non profit organization established by the society of the Daughters of St Camillus.

The centre is situation at the limits of Gurpur gram panchayat at Kaikamba on the outskirts of Mangalore city on national highway 13 between Mangalore – Moodbidri. The focal point of Institute is mainly to cater to abandoned and destitute women with their children who are infected by HIV/AIDS. Jeevadaan care and support centre has become an abode of life for many HIV infected women together with their children taking into consideration the need of children not to be separated from their mothers care, love and protection. Following the death of their mothers, the child is usually not accepted by their family members. Therefore, Jeevadaan, the life-giving centre as the name indicates is committed to enable these children to attain holistic and sustainable growth in secure conditions and to be productive members of the community. At present, there are 43 inmates; 20 women and 23 children. Jeevadaan care and support centre has an abode of life for many HIV infected women and children. Children are send to the nearby schools to continue their studies.

Wilfred Frank (OCD) a Newly appointed Parish Priest of Kolalgiri Church was present and expressed his joy of witnessing such an social work done by KORWA Association. He prayed and wished for growth of the Association. The general secretary Jessy Pinto briefed about social welfare activities undertaken by KORWA. Jessy said to the children to bring-out all their God given talents and make the future successful, but always remain as good human being and take care of the parents in their old age. KORWA public relations officer John Valerian Tauro, joint secretary Flora Hislop and member Deepak Monteiro were present on the occasion. Sweets were distributed to all the students after the stage programme. Sr Hildegard compared the programme.

Mangalore, 05 Sep 2012:

Lavina has no parents. She has only one younger brother who is studying in IV Standard at Surathkal. So she said she is fully depending on well-wishers and Social Workers. Whoever come forward to help she will always remain grateful to them and she will keep them in her prayers she said. KORWA request's readers of Belle vision to pray for this young girl and help her in whatever way it may be. Also can visit her at Wenlock Hospital, Hampankatta, Mangalore.
Lavina also mentioned that she is thankful to Wenlock Hospital Doctors, Nurses and staff for conducting her surgery which was successful. She said s he is receiving best attention from Wenlock Hospital.

The Headmistress of the school Mrs. Irene Sequeira in her speech thanked all the members of KORWA for their wonderful social work towards those who are in need. She was very happy to see that in a very short period after she had submitted her appeal, the KORWA members responded positively to the needs of the children. She encouraged the children to follow the footsteps of the KORWA committee as they grow up with a helpful heart.
All the children of the school from classes 1-7 were very happy. The members of the KORWA committee, in seeing the smiling faces of the beautiful children were also very pleased. The Committee blessed the children and wished them best for their academic year.

Mangalore, 15 Jul 2012:

Thus, with one girl-child the shelter home 'Samvedhana' came into existence in 2003. Within three months after taking into shelter the lone HIV affected girl-child, eight more HIV affected children were admitted as they had no one to take care of them as their parents had fallen victims to the dreaded disease. The organization has been passing through difficult phases. The house in which the humanitarian work of giving shelter to the unfortunate HIV affected children was initiated had to be vacated as the owner of the house came to know that the children were affected by the HIV. Thus, the organization had to change four to five houses within a period of one year. As if the apathy of the house owners towards the HIV affected children was not enough, the schools where these children were studying forced them to leave once these schools came to know about the HIV status of the children. In spite of all these difficulties, 'Samvedhana' has been taking care of the children.
Presently, 'Samvedhana' is located at Shiv Residency, Near Karnataka Bank Head Office, Pumpwell, Mangalore and has 58 children, 22 of them are females and 36 are males. In the past 9 years 18 of them succumbed to the disease. The organization is not getting any financial help from the government. The organization runs purely on the voluntary work of its members and is in need of financial support from philanthropists and donors.
